A Friend From Another Star

A Superman Fanbook

A Friend From Another Star is a fanbook dedicated to the DC character Superman or Clark Kent. The fanbook is meant to be a celebration and love letter to The Man of Steel and his mythos.
The book itself will be both digital/physical, including physical merchandise and be rated PG-13. This will be a non-profit project, with the proceeds after manufacturing and shipping going to a charity of the team’s choosing.

Contributor Results will be sent out on October 1st!

About This Project

  • We are looking for 20 page artists, 5 writers and 4 merch artists.

  • The book will be a 8.5 x 8.5 inch perfect bound book with unlockable stretch goals for future merchandise and book upgrades.

  • Shipping is allowed for this project! We also embrace alternate comic universes, like Absolute, Injustice, Elseworlds, etc and any ships, but the main focus should always be on Clark. Any other forms of Superman media, like movies, tv shows, cartoons and more, are also welcome!

  • It’s also important to note we would not like shipping to oversaturate the content of this book. We would love to cover all phases of Clark’s life!

  • The book itself will be both digital/physical, including physical merchandise and be rated PG-13. We will only be accepting contributors who are 18+ at this time, please do not apply if you are not of age.

  • Please read the info document below for more details about applying.

Application Guide

General Guidelines

  • All work must be submitted in high quality and accessible. Google drive links must be shared with viewing access, if you submit early enough and have made these mistakes, we may reach out, however, these applications will typically be skipped.

  • Original and fanart are permitted.

  • There will be a space for artists to pitch ideas they would want to create for the project, but it’s not required and will not affect your application.

  • You are allowed to apply to multiple positions, but you will only be selected for one of them. You are welcome to indicate which you prefer on either of your applications.

  • For all applicants, works featuring DC Comics or Superman in general are greatly appreciated, but not required.

  • All portfolio pieces must be SFW/PG-13 Rated. If you require any content warnings, please let us know.

Cover and Page Guidelines

  • Cover and Page artist applicants will be asked to submit up to three or four completed art pieces. At least one of these should contain a background. This does not mean your piece for this project should contain a background, we would just like to see what you are capable of.

  • We will be looking for technical skill (composition, anatomy, use of color, backgrounds, etc) and originality.

  • Both traditional and digital art are allowed, if you are working traditionally it must be submitted as an HD Scan.

  • You will be given the option to also add an extended portfolio, but we cannot guarantee mods will review it.

Merch Guidelines

  • All merch applicants will be required to send three to four completed art/merch pieces they best believe represent their abilities.

  • At least one of these samples must be a merch design, or something that could translate to merchandise.

  • We will be looking for technical skill (composition, anatomy, use of color, backgrounds, etc) and originality.

  • Both traditional and digital art are allowed.

  • Please make sure to indicate on your application whether or not you have ever designed or made merch before. This will not affect your application, but will be helpful for the mods to know.

  • Merch applicants will also have the opportunity to submit a link to an extended portfolio, but we cannot guarantee the mods will evaluate it.

Writer Guidelines

  • All writer applicants will be required to submit three pieces they best believe represent their abilities. We’ll be looking for clarity and application of language, and an ability to tell a complete story within a word count.

  • This should include at least one piece under 1000 words to show the mods your ability to handle shorter fiction, and no pieces should be over 2000 words. Non-narrative examples are welcome, but not necessary.

  • Excerpts from longer works are allowed as long as they make up a full scene.

  • Google Docs, Word Documents, PDFs, AO3 links and more are allowed. Please just remember to make it accessible for our mods to review.

  • Superman content is highly recommended but not necessary.
